Some brief thoughts: This is a book where the children act like children — equal parts selfish, equal parts heroic. And, although adventure initially comes to them in the form of said Phoenix and Carpet, from then to the end of the book, their decisions drive the action. They do not have adventures dropped on them from above — they make adventures real. And I cried at the end, but that happens…
